FOR A PLACE YOU HAVE ONLY DREAMT

Hannah Katharina Regler

Installation containing stretched knitted field held in an steel frame,
a reprogrammed Casio translator,
spatial soundscape

2026

I WOKE UP WITH THE ROOM STILL IN MY MOUTH.
ITS FLOOR PLAN PRESSED AGAINST MY TONGUE.

WHAT DOES MY DREAM ROOM MEAN?

A dream does not produce images. It produces conditions. a safe space is not found. it is generated through repeated evidence… the dream is the place where orientation replaces understanding.

WHAT DOES MY DREAM ROOM MEAN?

The installation borrows the logic by which dreams construct space.
It begins with the suspicion that the rooms we inhabit in dreams are not architecture but affect.
They do not contain experience;
they are the spatial form experience takes before it becomes language.
The dream room emerges as something the body already knows but cannot locate.
Not an image of a place, but the place a feeling assumes in order to become navigable.
A stretched knitted field, a reprogrammed Casio translator and sound do not represent a dream room;
they reconstruct the procedures through which a room becomes capable of existing for a body.
Orientation precedes understanding.
Repetition precedes memory.

The knitted field recalls both domestic feminized labour and the logic of neuronal mapping:
a surface of counting, deviation and return,
where textile structure echoes the distributed geometries of grid cells rather than illustrating them.
Across the installation, language, architecture and the body gradually exchange their functions.
The room is no longer encountered as enclosure but as residue
— a spatial belief the body continues to perform after meaning has withdrawn.

Borrowing from the phenomenon of semantic satiation, where repetition suspends the relation between word and referent until language begins to behave as matter rather than description. the installation approaches repetition as an operation that loosens language from its referent until words begin to behave less like descriptions than coordinates.

WHAT DOES MY DREAM ROOM MEAN?
WHAT DOES MY DREAM ROOM MEAN?
WHAT DOES MY DREAM ROOM MEAN?
WHAT DOES MY DREAM ROOM MEAN?

the mind asks what it means.
the body asks where it is.
